Many Years Ago

(Words: Brendan Nolan, Pat Greider; Music: Brendan Nolan)

[Southern Sunset]

Key of C# Minor, capo 2 key of B Minor

Misty meadows greet the dawn
Trees stand guard in the rising sun
In peaceful silence all around
Ghostly shapes rise from the ground
Morning waits for me and you
Hazy sunlight warms the dew
That once was stained crimson red
And hugged the dying and the dead
There once were soldiers here
But that was many years ago

There was laughter then
And children they were friends
Skipping stones across the stream
That flowed as lightly as their dreams
But the innocence within their eyes
Could not conquer all the lies
Told by older wilder ones
Who knew the value of a gun
They made them soldiers here
So many years ago

Feel the movement underground
As the night sky moves around
Flags unfurl, cannons road
All is changed forever more
The cards are dealt in the patriot game
The dreams they dream are not the same
A man is right and also wrong
But when he's dead his dreams are gone
Once there were young men here
But that was many years ago

Misty meadows greet the dawn
Trees stand guard in the rising sun
In peaceful silence all around
Ghostly shapes rise from the ground
Morning waits for me and you
Hazy sunlight warms the dew
That glistens on these fields of green
And holds the hearts of dreams unseen
